Neuralink’s First Recipient Noland Arbaugh

June 11, 2024

Noland Arbaugh is the first recipient of Neuralink’s brain-computer interface (BCI) and reports no sensation of the device. Paralyzed from the neck down since a 2016 accident, Arbaugh can now move a digital cursor using thought, enabling him to browse the web, send messages, and play video games. Neuralink’s device, the N1 Implant, uses 1,024 electrodes to capture neural activity and translate it into actions via Bluetooth. Despite a setback where 85% of the implant’s threads retracted, Neuralink adjusted the system to restore functionality. The device does require regular charging, which temporarily interrupts use, but overall it has greatly enhanced Arbaugh’s independence and quality of life. This BCI has significantly enhanced Arbaugh’s independence, demonstrating the potential of BCIs to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
