A recent publication from the University College London (UCL) show a shift in risk factors for dementia. By analyzing 27 studies spanning over 70 years, the authors identified cardiovascular health as a major emerging risk factor. Historically significant factors have diminished in impact due to effective public health interventions like anti-smoking campaigns and compulsory education. Obesity and diabetes have risen as major concerns, with hypertension remaining the leading risk factor for dementia. Their findings underscore the need for targeted cardiovascular risk management to prevent dementia. According to UCL’s lead author, Naaheed Mukadam, PhD, addressing modifiable risk factors could potentially prevent 40% of dementia cases. As the CDC estimates that 5.8 million Americans and approximately 944,000 people in the U.K. are affected by dementia, understanding emerging causes of this disease is crucial.
