Biography

Dr. Rick Burney currently serves as Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Division and Program Director for the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, he was selected for a Marshall Scholarship, completing an MSc degree in immunogenetics at Oxford University. He completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Madigan Army Medical Center and fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Stanford University. With a focus on translational research in gynecologic conditions affecting fertility, his review titled “Pathophysiology and pathogenesis of endometriosis” was selected as one of 25 articles from the archives of Fertility and Sterility that have “marked a great leap forward in reproductive science and healthcare”, with over 1200 citations. His current research efforts center on Precision Medicine approaches to reproductive health. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and chapters and has two biomarker patents pending. He received the CREOG faculty award for clinical teaching, the Mentors Cube for research mentorship, and serves as an examiner for the REI National Board Certifying Examination.
